LWVFL Lunch & Learn Series

This week's webinar will feature Ellen Freidin who will discuss the upcoming redistricting process as we inch towards the release of census data and apportionment of congressional seats.
Ellen, a game changer for Florida, is a constitutional attorney and the leader of FairDistricts Now, a successful 2010 citizens’ initiative to outlaw gerrymandering.

The League of Women Voters of Florida serves as an organizational executive committee member of the Fair Districts Coalition, which is leading the fight for fair districts in the Sunshine State.

Agenda:
  • Discussion: What lies ahead in Florida when it comes to redistricting? What is different from the last redistricting cycle? How do League members (and citizens) get involved?
  • Q&A Session with Ellen Freidin and Patricia Brigham
  • LWVFL Updates & News

To join, please register below. If you are unable to join live, look out for the recording of the webinar. It will be published in our biweekly newsletter: The Florida Voter.

Ellen Freidin is an attorney who has spearheaded two redistricting amendments in Florida as the chairwoman of FairDistricts Now Her efforts led to the passage of two amendments to Florida’s constitution regarding districting. Amendments 5 and 6 ban gerrymandering and require new district lines to take municipal boundaries, geographic divisions, and minority representation into account.

Freidin has continued to fight for fair and just drawing of electoral districts in Florida. Prior to passing two constitutional amendments in 2010, Freidin was integral in redrafting the Florida Constitution so that it represented women as well as men. In 1998, as part of the Constitutional Revision Commission, Freidin successfully proposed an amendment to eliminate gender-specific references within the Florida state constitution, resulting in a gender neutral state constitution. Freidin earned her J.D. from the University of Miami School of Law.

The Fair Districts Coalition is committed to holding legislators accountable to the drawing of district lines without intent to favor or disfavor a political party or an incumbent and ensuring that Florida’s district lines do not diminish the voting rights of racial and language minorities.

The current executive committee of the larger coalition consists of the following:
  • FairDistricts Now
  • All On The Line Florida
  • Common Cause Florida
  • League of Women Voters Florida
  • State Voices Florida
  • Florida Rising
  • State Innovation Exchange
