In the past two decades, AANHPI communities have become one of the fastest growing racial or ethnic groups in the United States.Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander (AANHPI) women have always been an integral part of the voting rights movement from opposing sexist and racist legislation to expanding the freedom to vote.
The 2020 presidential election saw historicvoter turnout by the AANHPI electorate. AANHPI voters had the highest growth of any racial group in 2020, with a 47% increase. This milestone happened despite a rise of anti-Asian hate and violence, and a global pandemic that shut down the US economy. However, it did not happen overnight. This was a result of decades of population growth, coordinated organizing, and strategic investments to encourage AANHPIs to register and vote at the same levels as other communities.
The League of Women Voters of Florida is pleased to welcome two special guests to educate League members on the history and voting trends of AANHPI communities. We will welcome bothWinnie Tang, PresidentofFlorida Asian ServicesandTravis BrooksofState Voices Florida.
