Volunteers are needed to continue the collaboration
with Girl Scouts
The Broward League kicked off its partnership with the Girl Scouts of Southeast Florida at an Aug. 23 event with more than 60 people in attendance.
The event featured a speaker from the Scouts who talked about a study the Girl Scouts had commissioned that found concerning issues girls face, especially with mental health. As a result, this Girl Scout council is reorganizing resources to better support girls, particularly those who have experienced adverse childhood experiences. The event explored solutions beyond the Scouts, too, and one recommendation is that voters talk to their representatives at all levels about better funding for mental health care for our children.
This Florida Girl event was our League's first activity with the local Girl Scouts, which grew out of a national partnership between the two groups. The main focus of the partnership is civics education. This partnership originally was led by Margie Rohrbach and Bonnie Gross. With Margie’s untimely death, we need a few volunteers to form a working group to get our League involved locally.
The program both groups felt met their missions was for League members to work with local Scout troops at various levels on civics-related badges. These include such badges as the fundamentals of democracy, “Behind the Ballot” and public policy and advocacy. For the League, this might be a new service offered and promoted through the Speakers Bureau, but we need a volunteer to help develop an operating plan with the Scouts and then help communicate it to members.
