The Florida state legislature is contemplating an unprecedented effort to redraw the state's Congressional maps in the middle of the decade with no new Census numbers to justify the effort.
Although voters have clearly said that they don't want partisan redistricting -- 63% of Florida voters approved Fair Districts amendments 5 & 6 in 2010 -- the Florida legislature is proposing to move forward with a new map as part of a larger, national effort to secure a partisan advantage in Congress.
Given that the League of Women Voters of Florida was one of the primary supporters of the Fair Districts amendments back in 2010, we have an obligation to defend that work now.
Say NO to mid-decade redistricting!
Florida families expect their elected leaders to focus on the kitchen table issues affecting voters' daily lives, not divert millions in taxpayer dollars to a rushed and unnecessary redistricting process.
Floridians overwhelmingly supported the Fair Districts Amendments in 2010 and sent a clear message to elected officials in Florida: district maps should be drawn fairly.
Partisan gerrymandering is unconstitutional in Florida. Maps must not be drawn with the intent to favor or disfavor any political party or incumbent.
Redrawing congressional districts in the middle of the decade, on partisan grounds, without new Census data, defies the will of the people and undermines the Florida State Constitution.
