Zero waste? The idea of reducing waste is spreading

As Broward County faces a crisis over what to do with almost four tons of waste created every year, the Broward League's Environmental Issues team has been promoting the idea that Broward needs to prioritize waste reduction.

A recent sign that things are changing: The town of Southwest Ranches has begun a Zero Waste initiative. This includes a new Zero Waste Advisory Board, promotion of composting and public education on "Recycle Right" on social media and the town website.

Monica Elliott, Southwest Ranches resident and former League president commented: "If there was ever a testament to the effect of the League, it is in Southwest Ranches.  I never, ever thought I would hear, yet alone receive a letter, with Zero Waste as a primary talking point."
