LWVFL & LWVUS Webinar: Organizing, No Matter the Circumstance

Organizing Webinar

This webinar will dive into the attempts to silence citizens and highlight best practices to organize, mobilize, and protest safely, no matter the circumstance.

In 2021, Florida enacted an anti-protest law (House Bill 1) in response to statewide protests in Florida demanding police accountability and transparency. The law chills First Amendment rights to protest. Many of the law's provisions are applicable when any sort of gathering is deemed a “riot.” Law enforcement is given broad discretion in applying these laws.

Now, Florida's Department of Management Services, which oversees state facilities, have changed rules for groups or individuals who want to reserve space inside our state Capitol.

The changes require those seeking to reserve areas to make their requests through specific administration officials or legislative leaders and require they line up with the mission of the state. “One material change to the Rule is that events must align with state agency missions and applications must come from an agency sponsor,” read a Department of Management Services letter. This change causes concern that any event deemed not in line with a DeSantis administration “mission” could be denied space.

Despite these troubling attempts to stifle speech, Floridians know the power of their voices.
