General Membership Meeting: Florida's Book Wars
FLORIDA’S BOOK WARS
Presented by Dr. Margery Marcus
Join us as we look at book censorship in Florida, where it is ranked second in the country in challenges to books. Parents’ groups in counties as dissimilar as Brevard and Broward now demand that local school boards remove books dealing with LGBTQ issues, social justice and any titles deemed “inappropriate”. Florida law bans the teaching of Critical Race Theory and any topics considered WOKE. Influential political groups are exerting influence in Tallahassee, driving these culture wars.
Margery Marcus, Ed.D., is an award-winning English teacher, retired from Broward County Public Schools after a long and successful career, both as an administrator and as a teacher. Dr. Marcus holds a B.A. in English and a master’s and doctorate in Education.
